OpenVPN Connect v3+ Setting

Fix: Untick "Require external certificate"

In modern releases of official OpenVPN Connect (v3+) on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, the option "Require external certificate" is ticked ON by default when importing .ovpn profiles.

Because our profiles authenticate via root CA certificates and your login credentials (no local hardware client certificates), leaving this switch enabled causes the app to halt with a missing certificate error.

1

Import Profile: In OpenVPN Connect, click File and drag-drop your downloaded .ovpn configuration.

2

Credentials: Enter your designated VPN Username and tick "Save password".

3

Untick Option: Locate the "Require external certificate" toggle or checkbox directly below your credentials and UNTICK / TURN IT OFF.

4

Connect: Click Save & Connect. The connection will handshake cleanly and connect.

TCP or UDP: Which should you choose?

Every city profile is provided in both protocols. Match the protocol to your network scenario.

Recommended Default

UDP (User Datagram Protocol)

Port 1194 • Direct Streaming

UDP transmits data without packet delivery acknowledgments. This provides higher speeds, lower latency, and zero overhead.

Best Scenarios for UDP:

  • 4K Video Streaming & Torrents: Maximum download speeds without packet-acknowledgment buffering.
  • Gaming & Discord/VoIP: Lowest ping with real-time audio and video delivery.
  • Fast Day-to-Day Surfing: Best protocol on stable home fiber or cable connections.
Firewall Bypass

TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)

Port 443 • HTTPS Masking

TCP validates every packet with receipts and error checks, mimicking standard encrypted HTTPS web browsing traffic.

Best Scenarios for TCP:

  • Strict Campus or Corporate Wi-Fi: Bypasses restrictive firewalls that block OpenVPN ports.
  • Restricted Hotspots: Maintains stable sessions on hotels, cafes, and airport networks.
  • Weak Mobile Signals: Automatically recovers lost packets over flaky 4G/5G connections.
